Part 3 Review

In early 2021, we applied for an energy project certificate and an energy operation certificate for our grid-scale battery.

On June 30, 2021, the Yukon Utilities Board (YUB) issued a Report to the Yukon Minister of Justice with their findings and recommendation that Yukon Energy be granted an energy project certificate and energy operation certificate for the Battery Energy Storage System.

In its Report, the YUB also:

  • stated that the battery will help provide reliable electricity service to Yukoners;
  • identified the battery as a preferred alternative to rental diesels and a new diesel plant;
  • noted that making a recommendation about ratepayer impact at this stage in a process, with so many outstanding costs, is difficult; and
  • recommended that Ministerial approval of this project, if granted, be informed by governmental and other public policy issues outside of the YUB's jurisidication as an economic regulator, specifically decision-making criteria related to First Nation economic development opportunities and climate change concerns.

On October 1, 2021, the Yukon Minister of Justice issued an energy project certificate to us for the battery project. As part of the certificate, we will now provide quarterly reports to the Minister of Justice about the project's progress and budget, and report on the safety measures we put in place to mitigate any potential risks to public safety.
