Yukon Energy believes vandalism to its equipment caused last night’s wide-spread power outage in the Southern Yukon. The Corporation has notified the RCMP and an investigation is underway.

“In flying over the transmission line this morning, one of our employees noticed that four porcelain insulators on one of our poles had been destroyed, possibly by bullets,” Yukon Energy spokesperson Janet Patterson said. “On closer inspection later today we found evidence of further damage to the conductors of the line.”

“Anyone causing this kind of damage is taking their life into their hands, as well as compromising the comfort and safety of their neighbours. This could have just as easily happened in winter when the results could have been a lot worse,” Patterson said.

The damaged insulators caused an outage that affected all communities along the Whitehorse-Aishihik-Faro transmission system, including Teslin, Carcross, Tagish, Johnson’s Crossing, Whitehorse, Carmacks, Faro, Ross River, Champagne, Mendenhall and Haines Junction.

The power went out at 10 minutes to 11 last night and was fully restored by 3:30 this morning.
