Yukon Energy will be doing a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of today's system-wide power outage. The issue was with one of our Whitehorse hydro units (the largest one referred to as the 'Fourth Wheel') but we need to do an inspection to better understand what went wrong, and what repairs, if any, need to be made.
In the meantime that unit will remain out of service, and we will provide Yukoners with power using our other hydro generators. If thermal is needed, we will first use our LNG units, followed by diesel if necessary.
We recognize that any outage is an inconvenience for many, and a loss of income for local businesses. While this may be of little consolation, please know that we work very hard to provide reliable service, and this was the first time in a few years that we have had a system-wide outage.
