Brushing

What is brushing?

Brushing means trimming or removing trees and vegetation that are growing too close to transmission and distribution power lines.

Brushing Trees Power lines

Why is brushing important?

  • It helps keep the power flowing safely and reliably.
  • It provides a safe workspace for Yukon Energy crews, contractors and other utility partners.
  • It prevents trees from knocking down power lines – because a fallen line can still be live, and live wires can be deadly.

Who’s responsible for brushing?

Low-voltage lines (secondary lines)

According to Yukon Energy’s Terms and Conditions (see section 5.3), if you have low-voltage lines running through your property, it’s your job to keep trees and vegetation trimmed according to the brushing standards listed below. You can do this yourself, as long as you stay at least three metres (10 feet) away from the line with your tools, your body and the tree. Not sure? Hire a Certified Utility Arborist.

If overgrown vegetation becomes a safety risk and isn’t addressed, Yukon Energy may step in to trim or remove it as needed. Charges will apply.

High-voltage lines

Yukon Energy is responsible for managing vegetation around high-voltage power lines. If these lines cross your property, we may need access to trim or clear vegetation safely. Your cooperation helps keep everyone safe.

Brushing guidelines

The amount of clearance required depends on the type of power line. Yukon Energy follows specific standards for:
