Meter Exchange Door Program

Yukon Energy exchanges electricity meters across our service areas each year.

Many meters are reaching the end of their lifespan. To keep providing safe, reliable service, we replace meters as part of our regular operations.

Each year, we install or replace more than 500 meters. This helps keep our system working well for customers now and into the future.

When meter exchanges happen

This work takes place annually across our service areas over the course of several months. For 2026, meter exchanges will begin in July and are expected to be complete by October.

What to expect

Your meter exchange should take less than 10 minutes. A brief power outage will be needed while the technician safely exchanges the meter.

  1. Before starting, a technician will knock on the door. They will explain the process and confirm you are ready for the brief outage.
  2. Once the meter has been exchanged and power is restored, the technician will confirm the new meter is working.
  3. You may need to reset some electronic devices after the outage, such as clocks, timers, appliances or wifi equipment.

Do I need to be home?

No. You do not need to be home as long as the meter is accessible.

Please make sure there is a clear and safe path to your electricity meter. If your meter is behind a locked gate or in another area that cannot be accessed, the exchange may not be completed.

If we cannot complete the exchange, we will leave a notice with next steps.

What you need to do

In most cases, you do not need to do anything.

Simply ensure your meter is easy to access on the day of the exchange. After the work is done, check your home or business for any electronic devices that may need to be reset.

Will I be charged?

No. You will not be charged an additional fee for your meter exchange.

Meter exchanges are a routine part of Yukon Energy’s operations.

Why is Yukon Energy exchanging meters?

Electricity meters have a lifespan. Over time, they need to be exchanged to help maintain safe and reliable service.

Replacing meters before they reach the end of their useful life helps us keep accurate service records and maintain the equipment that supports your electricity service.

Are these AMI meters?

No. These are not advanced metering infrastructure, or AMI, meters.

This is Yukon Energy’s routine meter exchange program. The new meters are the same type as existing customer meters.

Is this related to ATCO Electric Yukon’s AMI project?

No. This meter exchange program is separate from ATCO Electric Yukon’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure project.
