We're very excited about the news that Yukon College has been awarded an Industrial Research Chair in the area of Northern Energy Innovation. Money for the position has come from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) ($1-million) with Yukon Energy, ATCO Electric, Northwest Territories Power Corporation, and Qulliq Energy Corporation Nunavut committing an additional $50,000 each per year over the next five years.

The Chair’s research will serve Canada’s North by addressing energy challenges such as:

  • how to integrate more renewable energy into our isolated northern grids;
  • how to address issues around storing energy; and
  • how to make thermal use more efficient.

Over the coming months, Dr. Michael Ross will work closely with the utilities to identify specific research projects that will be developed and implemented throughout all three territories over the next five years.

The information collected with be shared with the public and with industrial partners, while sharing these results with the public, northern colleges, and the scientific community at large.
