With the tragic death of a Whitehorse teenager recently in the Yukon River, and a near miss shortly after that, we want to remind people to take great care when they are around the river.
While these incidents happened a fair distance downstream from our Whitehorse facilities, we want people to understand that the river can be particularly dangerous around our hydro dam. The same goes for our other dams, hydro plants, and control structures. Water currents are strong, there is a powerful undertow, and water levels can rise rapidly without warning.
At the Lewes River Control structure, always use the boat lock when travelling by watercraft. NEVER try to pass through the control gates.
Enjoy what nature has given us, but please treat it with the utmost respect.
