Congratulations and Thank You

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Yukon Bike to Work Week. There were 161 riders who signed up on the Bike to Work website. Together, all of you rode more than 4,600 kilometres during the week and saved more than 1,500 kilograms of greenhouse gases. Everyone who participated was entered in a draw for prizes. The Secret Diet of Air

Did you know that air can actually eat holes in the turbine blades of our hydro generators? It takes about 130 cubic metres of water per second to produce power at our Whitehorse hydro facility. Over time, the air bubbles in all that water can pit the metal blades. In some cases the pits can be a couple of centimetres deep! That's one of the things we look for when we do annual or multi-year overhauls of the units. While they are shut down, we take advantage of them being off-line to test all the alarms, change filters, oil, and do other preventative maintenance. We recently did this work on our largest hydro unit, known as the Fourth Wheel. We needed almost 73 kilograms (160 pounds) of welding material to fix the pits in the blades!  Each blade is close to four meters long. Inside the area where the turbine is housed. More Mercaptan Work Today

As we continue to do all our testing and get our new natural gas plant in Whitehorse ready to go into operation, we will again today be working with the liquid odorant mercaptan. Since fuels such as natural gas and propane are odorless, mercaptan is mixed with them so that if there is a gas leak, it can be easily detected. Mercaptan has a smell of rotten eggs or cabbage. If you notice the smell today, don't be alarmed. Contact us if you have any questions. Thanks.

Planned Outages For South and Little Fox, and Braeburn

To our customers at South Fox, Little Fox, and Braeburn: there will be two short (15 minute) planned power outages in your area in the coming weeks. The first will be on June 22 at some point between 7 and 11 a.m. and the second on July 3 at some point between 2 and 8 p.m. Please pass the word on to others in your community. Thanks very much.

Safety at our LNG Site

Because liquefied natural gas (LNG) is new to Yukon, it's understandable that you might have questions about its safety, and the safety of our LNG facility that is about to go into operation. We have prepared a brochure that talks about the safety aspects of the site. If you live in Whitehorse, watch for one of these to arrive in your mailbox within the next week or so.

Planned Power Outage for Dawson

This Year’s Levels on the Southern Lakes

Each year, as a public service to property owners and residents of the Southern Lakes, we post a forecast of what we expect the water levels to be this summer on Marsh Lake. Here is the first forecast of the season, with actuals to today (June 19th). The thick solid blue line shows the water levels to date; the dotted line shows the expected levels for the rest of the year.  We anticipate the water peaking in early to mid-August around the conceptual Full Supply Level we are looking at for the Southern Lakes Enhanced Storage Concept. This Morning’s Outage

Our crews are in the process of restoring power to communities in the Central Yukon after a power outage this morning. The outage affected Dawson, Faro, Carmacks, Stewart, Pelly and Ross River. Mayo remained energized. Dawson and Faro have been restored with diesel and we are now energizing the line in sections from Stewart to Faro. The cause of the outage is still under investigation.

Another Outage

Today we had another power outage in the Central Yukon that affected customers in Dawson City, Faro, the Minto Mine, Carmacks, Pelly Crossing and Stewart Crossing. This is the third one in two days, and understandably, customers’ patience is wearing thin.  Yesterday morning’s outage was caused by a raven that got into the Faro substation. Yesterday afternoon’s outage and the one this morning were as a result of generator issues. People have asked why there have been multiple outages in such a short period of time. Over the last several days we have had to split the Yukon grid so that we can do some preventative maintenance on our lines and structures. This splitting of the grid has caused some instability. Our staff are trying to find a solution so that this necessary maintenance work still gets done, but customers are not subjected to ongoing outages. We recognize that any time there is a power outage, local businesses in particular take a big hit. Please know that our crews are working as hard as they possibly can to safely address this power loss issue. We have been asked if Yukon Energy will provide a credit to those businesses who have had to close their doors during the outages. Yukon Energy does consider compensation if an outage has been caused by negligence on our part. However compensation is not provided for equipment failures and natural events such as animals or trees on the equipment, forest fires, and lightening. In terms of protecting home or business electronic equipment during outages, the first line of defense is always good surge protection, and we strongly encourage everyone to invest in a surge protection system.
