Today's question: Are the Whitehorse hydro turbines as efficient as newer turbines? Would installing newer turbines at Whitehorse alleviate some of the need for diesel generated power?
Thanks for the question. It is true that new hydro units are generally more efficient than our oldest hydro generators. We are currently looking into whether it would be financially beneficial to replace the turbine blades on at least one of our Whitehorse units with new blades. We'll provide you with an update on this blog once we have made some decisions around this issue.
I should mention that we did replace the turbine blades on our oldest Mayo units during the construction of the Mayo–Dawson line. We also rewound both our Aishihik 15-megawatt units within the last several years.
