Yukon Energy Corporation has begun removing rock from its underground Aishihik hydro plant, to make way for a new generator that will be installed late next year. The new turbine, known as Aishihik 3, will add seven megawatts of capacity to the existing plant, which current has the ability to produce 30 megawatts of power.

Removal of the rock began on Aug. 15 and will continue for the next 40 to 60 days.

The Aishihik 3 project is being made affordable by a $5 million contribution from the federal government’s eco-trust fund. The total cost of Aishihik 3, in 2009 dollars, is about $8.5 million.

This project will save approximately 3,800 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, as it will reduce the need to burn diesel during peak times.
