Yukon Energy has a new tool on our website. It's a chart that shows, in near real time (updated hourly), just how much energy is being consumed and whether we are having to burn any diesel to meet the demand. A second chart shows the energy consumption over the last 12 hours.

These charts are for our Whitehorse-Aishihik-Faro grid that serves most of the central and southern Yukon. However we are in the process of producing similar charts for our Mayo-Dawson grid.

Which turbines are on?  That seems to be a lot less than what I think our total capacity is.  Is the large turbine in Whitehorse not on and thus not included?

The maximum amount of hydro we have on the Whitehorse-Aishihik-Faro grid varies depending on the time of year. In the summer we have a maximum of 70 megawatts (40 from Whitehorse and 30 from Aishihik). However in the winter months that drops because we have less water flowing through our Whitehorse dam. At the moment we have just under 60 available megawatts, as the chart shows.

In terms of what turbines are on, that can vary from hour to hour depending on the amount of electricity we need to produce. At the time your question was sent to us, we were using our large Whitehorse hydro unit, two smaller units in Whitehorse, and our two Aishihik units.

We had quite a large power surge in the Kopper King area around 11:30 Friday evening. It popped surge protectors in the trailer park and cooked the band’s speakers in the KK Lounge. Any idea what caused this and how we could protect ourselves from future problems?

You might want to talk to the company that distributes power throughout Whitehorse (Yukon Electrical Company Limited). There were no issues on Friday night on the generation (Yukon Energy) side of things that would have caused a power surge.

Without knowing all the details, I can only make general comments about the surge protectors. It sounds to me like the protectors in the trailers did what they were designed to do: take the hit and thus prevent damage to electronics and household appliances.
