Power Back on in Rock Creek Following Week-end Flooding

About 47 homes in Rock Creek in the Dawson City area have electricity once again. Yukon Energy was forced to shut off the power to residents in that area just before four o’clock on Saturday afternoon. An ice jam in the Klondike River was causing flooding in Rock Creek, and the energy company was concerned that the high water might erode the groundings around the power poles, causing the poles to fall over.

As of Sunday night, flood waters had receded enough that Yukon Energy was able to re-energize the line. There was no structural damage to Yukon Energy property as a result of the flooding.

Yukon Energy will continue to monitor the situation. If further flooding occurs, it may be necessary to shut off the power in Rock Creek once again.

Most homes in Rock Creek were evacuated on Saturday as a result of the flooding. Many people had still not returned to their homes on Sunday night.
