Fourth Wheel Causes Power Outage to Parts of the Southern Yukon

Yukon Energy is investigating the cause of a power outage last night in parts of the Southern Yukon. Most of Whitehorse, Faro, Ross River, Deep Creek and Mendenhall lost power just after 9:30 p.m.

Power was restored to most places within an hour, although it was two hours before residents of Deep Creek and Mendenhall had electricity once again.

Yukon Energy believes the cause of the outage was a problem with its number four hydro unit in Whitehorse. The unit is out of service today while staff work to determine the problem and how it can be fixed.

In the meantime, power will be produced using the three other hydro units in Whitehorse and one of Yukon Energy’s Aishihik hydro generators.
