(Whitehorse) – Yukon Energy has begun construction of a boat launch at the north end of Aishihik Lake. The boat launch and mooring facility is a condition of the energy company’s 2002 Aishihik water license. When completed, the launch will give Champagne and Aishihik First Nation users access to the lake at all levels allowed under the water license.

“This initiative has involved significant consultation with the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, and the selected design has been approved by them and by all regulators,” Yukon Energy spokesperson Janet Patterson said. “This project has been quite some time in the planning and we’re happy that it is now proceeding.”

The contract to build the launch was awarded through a competitive bid tendering process to the Whitehorse-based company Kearah & WERI General Environmental Contractors Inc. Of the received bids, this contractor offered the best price and greatest employment benefit to Champagne and Aishihik First Nations members.

Eight First Nations members are to be employed during the work, which started in mid-March and will take four to six weeks to complete.

The total cost of the boat launch project is expected to be just over $600,000.
